I’m Eddie Zar, an electronic dance music producer, musician and performer based in Los Angeles. I’m also a husband, a father of twin boys and a business owner. This post is about the part of my background that rarely makes it into a music bio: the years in accounting, finance and retail clothing, and how they still affect the way I release music.
How I started, briefly
I grew up listening to all kinds of music and ended up loving electronic dance music most. In 1998, while I was in college, I was shown FruityLoops and started making loops and beats between classes. Work took over after that, and it was 2016 before I found those sessions on an old hard drive and went back to producing. The full version is in Finding My Sound.
From accounting and finance to retail clothing
I studied accounting and business finance, and that’s the work I went into. I liked it. I enjoy working with data and running an analysis until the picture is clear.
What I learned about myself along the way is that I also need to be around people, and the numbers alone didn’t give me that. So I moved into the retail clothing business.
Why the numbers still help
The habits from accounting stayed with me. When I decide when a track should come out, I treat it like any other business decision: look at what I know, make a plan, commit to it. The same habit helps when something goes wrong. I’d rather work out what happened and decide on the next step than sit and worry about it.
Numbers also tell me what’s working. Cause of You had been out for more than two years when it passed 144,000 streams in 2024. That’s the kind of figure I pay attention to.
None of this writes the music. Analysis is for planning, and the track still has to make someone feel something. I cover that side in how I build an EDM track.
What I’m aiming for
My influences are Armin van Buuren, Tiësto, Calvin Harris and David Guetta. I’d play any music festival, and the two I’d most like to play are Ultra Music Festival in Miami and Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas.
On the release side, when this post first went up in January 2024 I had more than fifty unreleased tracks, and my goal was to put one out every week.
